Catching Up

Outreach kept me very busy in November and I traveled to many different parts of the state, but now that it is December, things are beginning to slow down...which means I will not have any crazy stories for awhile to share. Before I forget, during a recent Powhatan box program, I did have a kindergartner explain to me what it is like to have diarrhea and vomit at the same time, he even included sound effects. This will be a long post since I am catching up on a few weeks of 23 things.

Week 9: Podcasts
I receive emails every so often about podcasts on the Gilder Lehrman website. I enjoyed listening to the Harriet Tubman and the John Brown podcasts that they had available online. I knew (but didn't really know) that VHS had banner lectures available online, so I took a look at what was available and listened to Theodore C. DeLaney discuss school desegregation. My husband is the media designer at Richmond's First Baptist Church and is responsible for uploading their podcasts and media files available to listen to online and/or download so I already have been informed on the difference between podcasts and audio files and how they work. This was a fun assignment and a good excuse to listen to some lectures!

Week 8: Google Documents
Google Documents sounds like a great idea. I wish this had been around (or I had known about it) when I was in school, it seems like it would be great for group projects where everyone has busy schedules or you are in that group with the one person who never shows up to meetings. It seems like it would be a very useful tool for editing documents with other people. I think this may have been something that Geoff and I could have used while working on our People and Moments in Time magazine.

Week 7: Wikis
Great idea. I think Geoff and I should make an Education page. The VHS Style and Usage guide is awesome! And, I feel like I need to look for any library books that may be in the Education office...

Week 6: Social Networking
Alright, because of this exercise I finally broke down and made a Facebook page. I have avoided Facebook/MySpace until now because even though they are fantastic networking tools, I could care less what my non-friends from high school/college are doing. Since VHS has a new Facebook page, I started a Facebook page. I only got as far as adding a photo and have not added any friends yet, that will be my next step. And, I may even make a MySpace page too...
